Midnight Mass is a mini-series that's running on Netflix. It was written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who gave us Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, and the Haunting of Bly Manor.
Taking place in a small island community called Crockett, the residents are surprised by the appearance of a new priest in their church. They had sent their beloved, elderly (and dying) priest on a trip to the Holy Lands. But the new priest promises them that, while their regular priest has taken ill, he's recuperating in the hospital and shall be along to join them soon.
But we soon see that there's something 'off' about this new priest, who arrives with a large crate--with something inside that's tapping impatiently to be let out. Midnight Mass is a slow burner at first, but that's so you can get to know the characters so you can fear for their lives once the weird shit really hits the fan. The horror elements build up slowly and steadily until they overtake the story.
While there are no bondage--nor BF--scenes for us, Midnight Mass is still an extremely well-done horror story that really benefits from its long running time. It has moments of sheer terror that are shocking and masterfully done, making it the perfect thing to watch this Halloween, or any time. Highly recommended.
