To the Devil, A Daughter

Happy October! While Halloween isn't until the very last day of the month, for me, Halloween starts right now and runs all 31 days of October. First up is To The Devil, A Daughter.

Despite it being made by the legendary Hammer Films in England, To the Devil, A Daughter is pretty bad. The saving grace of the film--for me, anyway--is that it's got not one, but two great barefoot bondage scenes.

Actress Izabella Telezynska plays Margaret, a member of a cult who--in this scene--is about to give birth to a demonic baby.

But, in order to give birth, Margaret must be tied down to the bed with her bare legs and feet tightly bound together. It's part of the ritual of the cult that she belongs to.

And this intense bondage is something that Margaret is in full compliance with. Even so, the birth is very grisly, and ends in her death.

Later in the film, we're treated to a flashback of when Margaret became impregnated, which was during a satanic ritual.

She's tied down in spread-eagle fashion and barefoot in a wonderful shot. Nastassja Kinski has often been mistakingly identified as having the bondage scenes, here. But it was actually Izabella Telezynska in these scenes.

Cat People

I mentioned in yesterday's post on To The Devil, A Daughter that Nastassja Kinski was mistakingly thought to have been the actress in its bondage scenes.

It was just a few years later, in the 1982 remake of Cat People, that Kinski would get her own bondage scene, and it was a banger (literally!).

Kinski plays a young woman who's part of a race of shapeshifters. She is forever unable to have sex, or else she will turn into a panther.

And so her boyfriend, played by John Heard, ties her down to the bed. She does this willingly, because she no longer wants to live life as a human.

Kinski is completely nude in this scene, tied down in spread-eagle fashion. It's a classic bondage scene in mainstream cinema.

She gets her wish on all accounts.

At the very beginning of the film is another scene showing a young woman getting tied to a tree.

It's part of a ritual, taking place centuries before the main events of the film, that tries to explain how the Cat People came to be.

She's wearing a simple shift and is barefoot.

To The Devil, A Daughter is one of the horror films from the House of Hammer that did not stick the landing, as they say.

But while it wasn't a very good film overall, it still had some exceptional barefoot bondage scenes. Two in the same film.
