The Spider

I had no idea who the Spider was until I saw this cover from a pulp magazine (I saved this picture because of the damsel in distress). It turns out the Spider was created in the wake of the popularity of The Shadow ("Who Knows What Evil Lurks in the Heart of Men?").

Mild-mannered millionaire Richard Wentworth became the Spider in order to fight various bizarre threats and villains. The Spider is now considered one of the most popular heroes to emerge from the 1930s golden era of the pulps, next to The Shadow and Doc Savage.

MI4: Ghost Protocol

It occurred to me that I did vidcaps of the last two Mission Impossible movies, with the recent one having been done because the lead actress was barefoot.

But in the fourth Mission Impossible film, Ghost Protocol (and my favorite), Paula Patton has a few scenes sans shoes, as well.

Patton's character even gets into a nice fight with a female assassin, and they are both barefoot.

Of course things get jittery when a gun is drawn.

Can you guess who wins? Ghost Protocol is highly recommended above and beyond these nice BF scenes.

Daughter of the Jungle

Sabrina Siani stars as an honest to goodness jungle girl in Daughter of the Jungle, a movie from 1982 that I had never heard of until Togolane recently posted this clip.

Siani wears an extremely scant outfit (which probably feels nice in that hot, sultry jungle) when she gets captured by a bunch of guys with dubbed voices that make them sound like Saturday morning cartoon villains.

She gets tied to a pole in a hut. Siani does a great job at still looking fierce and tough even while bound.

It would have been nice if she were tied hand and foot, and maybe not wearing flat-soled sandals (what self-respecting jungle girl wears sandals, anyway>), but it's still a nice scene. You can find it right here.

Abduction

Abduction was a movie released in the 1970s that was strongly based on the Patty Hearst kidnapping case (the famous heiress who was kidnapped by a radical group). While the actress in the movie was bound in bed in this fashion, her feet were never tied like they were in the movie's poster (in point of fact, her feet were never tied at all).

In addition to being the poster for the film, this was also the cover of the VHS (remember them?) copy of the movie. It was this very picture that drew my attention to the film while looking for something to rent in a video store (remember them?), and, because of this, I've always had a fondness for this artwork.

Last gasp of summer

We've observed Labor Day here in the US, which is sort of the unofficial end of summer (even though it actually runs a couple more weeks). And that made me think of Mamma Mia.

Not the movie, which has actors singing ABBA songs for some weird reason, but this scene from the film.

Amanda Seyfried stars as a young woman who's trying to find out who her father really is. She swims out to a sailboat where all of the "suspects" are aboard (how convenient) and spends the day with them.

She's barefoot throughout this whole sequence, including when they go ashore on a small island to have a picnic. A nice BF scene from a silly but fun movie.

Fun with the Dark Crystal

While I enjoyed the original Dark Crystal, I never really considered it to be my all-time favorite movie. I guess it never really captivated me, like Star Trek, or Star Wars did.

But I really liked Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which debuted on Netflix over the weekend. This was a rousing, fun, and epic fantasy that's rich in storytelling style while also being visually stunning at the same time. I really wasn't expecting to like this show as much as I did. At first I thought I was sitting down to watch a children's show. While the Dark Crystal may entertain children, it's aimed at the whole family.

Even if you're not a big fan of the original film, you might want to give the Dark Crystal series a shot. It has far more depth and resonance, while offering some mesmerizing imagery. Highly recommended.
